Albums worth knowing: a guide to techno classics

Why albums

DJs think in tracks, but an album lets you hear an artist fully: their imagination, moods and how they build a longer story. The records below are not a ranking but a map. Each shows a different side of techno, and most connect to lessons you've already done.

Detroit and its children

• Jeff Mills – "Waveform Transmission Vol. 1" (Tresor, 1992). Fast, raw, machine techno that showed Europe what Detroit sounded like after Underground Resistance.
• Robert Hood – "Minimal Nation" (Axis, 1994). The founding statement of minimal, which had its own lesson.
• Underground Resistance – "Interstellar Fugitives" (1998). The collective's first full album, full of electro, broken beats and "high-tech funk".
• Drexciya – "Neptune's Lair" (Tresor, 1999). Electro with an underwater mythology, one of the key examples of Afrofuturism.

Europe in the 1990s

• Plastikman – "Sheet One" (1993). Richie Hawtin's dark, psychedelic acid, including "Plasticity", which you know from the minimal lesson.
• Basic Channel – "BCD" (1995). Edited versions of their vinyl dub techno classics. For many, a first contact with that sound.
• Surgeon – "Basictonalvocabulary" (Tresor, 1997). The raw Birmingham sound in full form.

New classics

• Shed – "Shedding the Past" (Ostgut Ton, 2008). A bridge between classic techno and the new Berlin sound.
• Voices From The Lake – "Voices From The Lake" (Prologue, 2012). The peak of hypnotic techno, Resident Advisor's album of the year.
• Objekt – "Flatland" (2014). Precise, unpredictable techno and electro, proof that the genre can still surprise.

How to listen

Pick one album for an evening and play it in full, without skipping. Notice how the artist builds tension between tracks, not only within them. If a record grabs you, check the label that released it. You know from the labels lesson that it's the best route to further discoveries.
